Reddit Plans Login Tests as AI Search Squeezes Referral Traffic

Reddit will test a primarily logged-in experience outside the US. Sales rose 53%, but declining search referrals threaten its daily audience.

Reddit plans to test a primarily logged-in experience outside the United States as declining search referrals challenge its audience growth. The announcement Thursday connects a familiar frustration for web users, another sign-in prompt, with a larger business struggle over advertising, automated data collection and AI-powered search.

Chief Executive Steve Huffman said the tests would begin in selected non-US markets in the coming months. In a public post, he said the boundaries between logged-in and logged-out access remained unsettled, including how visitors arriving from search or shared links would see a post. Reddit has not announced an immediate worldwide shutdown of account-free browsing.

That qualification matters for both users and investors. A test can change after the company measures its effects. Describing the announcement as an already implemented global login requirement would turn a proposed transition into a completed product change and obscure the questions Reddit itself says it has yet to resolve.

Strong advertising revenue, weaker search discovery

The company reported third-quarter revenue of $895 million, up 53% from a year earlier, and net income of $283 million. Advertising generated $847 million, while other revenue contributed $48 million. The figures show that advertising remains the dominant source of sales, despite the prominence of debates about licensing discussion data to AI companies.

Advertising accounted for approximately 95% of quarterly revenue, a calculation using the reported totals. That makes the quality and frequency of user engagement commercially significant. More control over access to the site may support data licensing, but the larger existing business still depends on attracting people and making their visits valuable to advertisers.

Audience trends were less uniform than the revenue increase. Reddit’s quarterly average daily active uniques reached 130.3 million, up 12% globally, while the US measure fell 2% to 50.7 million. Daily active uniques are a platform audience metric, not a count of paying subscribers or a guarantee that each visitor can be monetized equally.

In its shareholder letter, Reddit said search referrals declined meaningfully during the quarter and continued falling in October, by more than one million referrals on average per week. If that pace continues, management said fourth-quarter daily active uniques could fall by a low-double-digit percentage from the current base. That is a conditional outlook, rather than a reported fourth-quarter result.

A login changes the value of a visit

Huffman’s post described several reasons for the transition: more personalized recommendations, more relevant advertising, protection against unauthorized scraping and adaptation to regulations. He also said accounts would not require users’ real names or verified identities. A login requirement and a requirement to disclose a legal identity are different policies.

The commercial logic is to turn occasional visitors into a recurring audience with preferences and an ongoing relationship to the platform. That can improve advertising signals and help users return to communities. It also adds a step before reading, which could discourage some visits. The tests must establish how those effects balance in practice.

Reddit’s shareholder letter says logged-in and app users together generate more than 80% of monetization. That concentration helps explain why management is emphasizing those audiences even as overall search traffic weakens. It does not mean every lost referral is financially unimportant: search can also bring back existing users or introduce people who later become regular participants.

AI answers alter the path to the platform

Huffman told the earnings call that Google’s AI Mode was not driving traffic to Reddit, The Verge reported. That is the executive’s assessment of the search relationship, not an independent measurement proving that all AI search products reduce traffic for every publisher. The disclosed referral trend is the more concrete company-specific evidence.

TTN’s analysis of AI search and publisher economics explains the underlying tension: a service can use or summarize material without sending the reader to its original destination. A company can consequently become important to an information ecosystem while receiving fewer visits through the route that previously supported its advertising business.

Reddit forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $1 billion to $1.03 billion. The coming tests will therefore take place while it is still projecting substantial sales, rather than responding to a reported collapse in revenue. As with other earnings assessments, the central distinction is between current financial performance and the audience assumptions supporting future growth. The results of the login tests will help determine whether greater control also produces a more durable business.
