Robinhood’s Crypto Revenue Falls 55% Despite Record Company Sales

Crypto trading weakened while options and equities grew. Robinhood reported record revenue, but net income fell to $476 million.

Robinhood's cryptocurrency revenue fell 55% from a year earlier to $120 million in the third quarter, even as the company reported record overall revenue on Tuesday. The contrast shows how activity in digital assets can diverge from the rest of a trading platform, rather than moving in step with every other product offered to customers.

Total net revenue rose 12% to about $1.42 billion. Net income fell 14% to $476 million, or 51 cents a diluted share, according to the company's release. Reuters independently reported the profit decline and weaker crypto activity. A larger business therefore did not translate into a larger reported bottom line in this quarter.

For crypto readers, the operating data are more revealing than the company-wide sales record. Total crypto notional trading volume declined 38% to $50 billion. Robinhood's app accounted for $21 billion, down 48%, while Bitstamp contributed $29 billion, down 28%. These are year-over-year comparisons, not changes since the second quarter or measures of a particular token's price performance.

Trading volume and revenue tell different stories

Crypto revenue declined faster than the dollar value traded. That gap means volume alone cannot explain the entire change in revenue. A platform's product mix, customer mix and transaction economics can affect how trading becomes income. The quarterly totals do not, by themselves, identify the contribution from each of those possible factors.

The distinction also matters when comparing a trading platform with a cryptocurrency investment. A token's market price, the amount customers trade and the revenue a company receives from those transactions are separate variables. Higher asset prices do not guarantee more trading, and more trading does not guarantee the same revenue per dollar of activity.

Our explanation of crypto investment wrappers examines a related ownership distinction: exposure to an asset is not the same as exposure to the business providing access to it. Robinhood's results are evidence about its own operations. They should not be generalized into a precise measure of worldwide crypto trading or used to explain every exchange's performance.

Other trading products supplied the growth

Options revenue rose 31% to $399 million and equities revenue increased 41% to $121 million. Event-contract revenue reached $173 million. Those activities helped lift transaction-based revenue overall despite the crypto decline. Their growth explains why a strong company-wide trading headline can coexist with a weak digital-asset business.

This is a revenue-mix story rather than proof that the same customers moved a fixed amount of money from one product to another. The release supplies aggregate business figures, not a customer-by-customer account of why trades were placed. Establishing substitution between products would require more detailed evidence than two revenue lines moving in opposite directions.

Our guide to crypto leverage also shows why activity and risk need separate consideration. Products with different collateral arrangements, settlement rules and loss mechanisms cannot be compared only by the number of contracts or dollars traded. That is relevant to the platform's growing range of products, without implying that every new activity carries the same risks as spot crypto.

Record sales did not protect reported earnings

Robinhood reported $67 million of unrealized losses, primarily associated with the valuation of Robinhood Ventures Fund I. It also introduced adjusted net income and adjusted earnings per share as new non-GAAP measures this quarter. Adjusted net income was $550 million and adjusted diluted earnings were 60 cents a share; those measures also declined from a year earlier.

The adjustments help distinguish some non-operating effects, but they do not replace the reported accounts. A useful comparison keeps both measures visible and checks whether the definitions remain consistent over time. Excluding an unrealized valuation movement may clarify operating trends, while the economic exposure represented by the underlying investment still belongs to the business.

Our coverage of SoFi's tokenized deposit offering illustrates why a financial platform's expanding product range requires attention to the economics of each business. For Robinhood, the next results will test whether crypto activity recovers and whether other products can keep supporting growth. Tuesday's report establishes diversification in revenue, but also a clear limit to the headline: record sales alone did not deliver higher quarterly profit.
