EV Charging Cost Calculator

Estimate charging cost using usable battery capacity, starting and target charge, and electricity price. This model assumes 90% charging efficiency.

How to calculate home EV charging cost

Enter battery capacity in kWh, the starting and target charge percentages and electricity price per kWh. The calculator uses a fixed 90% charging-efficiency assumption: energy drawn from the wall equals energy added to the battery divided by 0.90.

EV charging example

Charging a 75-kWh battery from 20% to 80% adds 45 kWh to the battery. At the assumed efficiency, the wall supplies 50 kWh. At $0.16 per kWh, the estimated cost is $8.00. A full 0–100% charge at the same rate is approximately $13.33.

EV charging cost questions

Does it calculate charging time?

No. The tool estimates energy and cost, not charging duration or charging speed.

Does it include public charging fees?

No. Session fees, per-minute charges, idle fees, parking and subscription charges are not included.

Why is wall energy higher than battery energy?

The model allows for losses during charging. Actual efficiency differs by vehicle, charger, temperature and charging conditions.
