Fuel Cost Calculator

Estimate trip or monthly fuel cost from distance, fuel economy and the local price per US gallon or liter.

How to calculate gas costs for a trip

Choose miles or kilometers, enter your fuel economy and select US MPG or liters per 100 km. When you select US MPG, enter the price per US gallon; when you select L/100 km, enter the price per liter. Enter one-way or round-trip distance as needed.

Gas cost formula and example

For US units: gallons needed = miles ÷ MPG, and trip cost = gallons × price per gallon. A 300-mile trip at 30 MPG needs 10 US gallons. At $3.50 per gallon, the estimated gas cost is $35.00.

For metric units: liters needed = kilometers × liters per 100 km ÷ 100. A 500-km trip at 7 L/100 km needs 35 liters; at $1.60 per liter, the estimate is $56.00.

Fuel cost calculator questions

Can I calculate a round trip?

Yes. Enter the total distance for both directions, including any extra planned driving.

Does this use US or Imperial gallons?

The MPG option uses US gallons. Imperial MPG is a different measure and should be converted before entering it.

Is this the full cost of driving?

No. The estimate covers fuel only. It excludes tolls, parking, insurance, maintenance and depreciation.
